Does it seem as if God is silent? Has it been a while since you have heard a word from God? There are several reasons we may not be hearing from Him. One is lack of time in His written word. Jesus said He would bring all things to our remembrance, but He can’t bring something to our remembrance we never knew in the first place!
God may be silent because of our own disobedience or procrastination. Are we doing the last thing He told us to do? Just as a parent may tell a child to do something and not tell them something else unless it’s done, so our Father may be waiting on us. Why should He tell us anything else? Why should God give further light to someone who is not walking in the light he already has?
Sometimes God is silent because He wants us to press into Him – to draw close to Him. He sometimes hides Himself so we will seek Him more diligently. At those times, we need to devote more time to being in His presence so we can hear His whisper.
When the prophet Elijah was hiding out in a cave due to Queen Jezebel seeking to kill him, God told him to go and stand before Him on the mountain. I Kings 19:11-12 (NLT) says, “And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.”
Sometimes God speaks in ways we don’t expect. We may be expecting some great revelation or a sign from above, but He may just want to speak to us in our spirits as we quiet ourselves before Him. Psalm 46:10 (KJV) says, “Be still and know that I am God.”
Lastly, if we have a close walk with Jesus, He doesn’t need to speak all the time. Just as a couple who have been together a long time can sit quietly in each other’s presence without saying anything, our relationship with God can be so close and intimate, at times words are unnecessary. We just enjoy time in each other’s presence.
